The common VAT mistake
To go from a gross (VAT-included) price back to net, you can't just subtract the VAT percentage from the gross amount — that's a different, smaller number than the actual tax. Instead, divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate).
gross = net × (1 + VAT% / 100)
net = gross / (1 + VAT% / 100)
net = gross / (1 + VAT% / 100)
Example: a $100 net price with 19% VAT → $19 VAT, $119 gross. Working backwards, a $119 gross price at 19% VAT → exactly $100 net (not $119 − 19% = $96.39, which is wrong).
Examples
- Standard EU rate (19%): $50 net → $9.50 VAT, $59.50 gross.
- Reduced rate (7%): $50 net → $3.50 VAT, $53.50 gross.
- Extracting from a receipt: a $53.50 total at 7% VAT → $50 net, $3.50 VAT included.
