How BMI is calculated
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²
Example: 70 kg at 175 cm → 70 / 1.75² = 22.9 — in the "normal weight" range.
BMI categories
- Below 18.5: underweight
- 18.5–24.9: normal weight
- 25–29.9: overweight
- 30 and above: obese
⚠ What BMI doesn't tell you
BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so it can be misleading for very muscular people, and doesn't account for age, sex, or where body fat is distributed. It's a quick population-level screening number, not a diagnosis — talk to a doctor for a fuller picture of your health.
