Rates last verified against Amazon's official KDP help pages: September 2026. Amazon updates these occasionally (most recently, the eBook 70%-royalty price band) — always confirm against your own KDP dashboard before pricing a book. Paperback Large Trim is currently only available for Black & White interiors, and Hardcover is only available in the marketplaces listed, until we can verify exact figures for the rest.

How eBook royalties work

Amazon pays 70% of your list price (minus a delivery fee based on file size) if your price falls within the 70% band for your marketplace, or 35% of list price with no delivery fee otherwise.

70% royalty = (0.70 × price) − (file size in MB × delivery cost per MB)

How paperback and hardcover royalties work

Royalty is 50% or 60% of list price (60% once your price clears a per-marketplace threshold), minus Amazon's printing cost for your page count, interior type and trim size. Expanded Distribution (selling through non-Amazon retailers) always pays a flat 40%, using the same printing cost.

royalty = (royalty rate × price) − printing cost

Amazon also enforces a minimum list price: printing cost ÷ royalty rate. Below that, your book can't earn a positive royalty, so KDP won't let you publish at that price.

Frequently asked questions

Either you selected the 35% option, or your list price falls outside the 70% price band for your marketplace (on Amazon.com that's currently $2.99–$12.99).

Both print full-color interiors; Premium Color uses heavier paper and costs more per page to print, which lowers your royalty at the same list price.

No — it just multiplies your per-book royalty by however many sales you type in, so you can see what different sales volumes would mean for your income. Actual sales depend on far more than pricing.
